In a bid to encourage shared parenting and to maintain women in the job market, the Government is introducing a new entitlement to shared parental leave for parents of children born after 5th April 2015. Employers with a high proportion of female employees can now look forward to their employees taking shorter periods out of work when they have a baby. This means that valuable employees with specialist skills don’t have to be counted out for a full year when they become pregnant.

With effect from this Friday, 8th March, parents will be entitled to 18 weeks parental leave per child. This is an increase from 13 weeks and may be taken up to the child's 5th birthday (or 18th birthday if the child is disabled).
