In a bid to encourage shared parenting and to maintain women in the job market, the Government is introducing a new entitlement to shared parental leave for parents of children born after 5th April 2015. Employers with a high proportion of female employees can now look forward to their employees taking shorter periods out of work when they have a baby. This means that valuable employees with specialist skills don’t have to be counted out for a full year when they become pregnant.

Employment legislation has been front page news this week because of a ruling by an EAT. The tribunal has ruled in favour of an employee who argued his holiday pay should take into account his overtime pay. Previously, an employee’s basic pay was the only consideration in their holiday calculation. After taking into account European case law, the EAT’s judgement concluded that this is no longer acceptable and that pay for required overtime must be considered in a workers holiday pay.

Trade body, The Ladder Association has launched the 2014 Ladder Exchange which is currently running to 31st December 2014. The safety conscious Ladder Exchange programme was introduced by the Ladder Association in 2012 and promotes the use of safe ladders and helps take potentially dangerous ones out of service by allowing both individuals and businesses to trade their old ladders, regardless of condition, for discounted new ones.

National Minimum Wage Increase
The National Minimum Wage is set to rise on the 1st October 2014 with more than 1 million people going to see their pay rise by as much as £355 a year.

Since the Health & Safety Executive introduced a fee for their investigations, the number of inspections has increased by 6%. If the HSE has a cause to investigate, they will levy at a fee of £124 per hour (£992 per day) for visits. These charges are on top of any other costs that may be incurred as a result of an incident.
